JAMA Study Calls Peptide Use a 'Grey Zone' in AU
A University of Queensland JAMA manuscript warns that synthetic peptides operate in a grey zone between medicine, wellness, and illicit markets as social media drives uptake.
A peer-reviewed manuscript published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has described the growing use of synthetic peptides as operating in a “grey zone” between medicine, wellness, and illicit markets. The paper, authored by researchers including Dr Timothy Piatkowski from the University of Queensland, calls for stronger regulation, harm reduction guidance, and international surveillance to address what it frames as a fast-moving public health challenge.
What the JAMA Paper Found
The manuscript documents how synthetic peptides have moved rapidly from laboratory research into consumer markets, driven largely by social media promotion. As of mid-2026, the researchers counted more than 130,000 Instagram posts and over 230 million views on TikTok related to synthetic peptides. Products like BPC-157, GHK-Cu, and retatrutide are promoted online for purposes ranging from muscle recovery to anti-ageing and cognitive enhancement, despite most lacking approval from any major regulator.
Dr Piatkowski, a National Health and Medical Research Council emerging leadership fellow at UQ’s School of Public Health, told Nutrition Insight that the trend is comparable to the earlier rise of GLP-1 weight loss drugs. “Although currently in phase 3 trials, it has been purchased illicitly and used via unregulated markets by many people,” he said of retatrutide.
The paper highlights that users span a wide demographic range, from 16-year-olds to 70-year-olds, with many “stacking” peptides alongside conventional supplements. This blurring of pharmaceutical and nutritional products creates what the authors describe as “structural vulnerabilities” in consumer protection.
The Australian Context
Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration has flagged a significant increase in the promotion and use of unapproved peptide products, including injectable formulations. A TGA spokesperson told ABC’s 7.30 program that the increase was largely driven by “social media promotion, influencer marketing and the portrayal of peptides as ‘wellness’ treatments.”
The Australian National University’s Professor Lara Malins, a medicinal chemist, told the same program there was no way of knowing the contents or identity of unregulated products purchased online. “You might buy something off the internet that’s labelled a GLP-1 peptide, but in reality what is in that bottle might be very different to what you would expect,” she said.
Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) has also responded, announcing in May that it would expand its drug-testing program to screen more athletes for a wider range of peptides, markers, and metabolites. SIA CEO Dr Sarah Benson said the agency was working with law enforcement to identify substances that could pose a doping threat, and was investigating whether professional athletes were among those buying unregulated products online.
International Calls for Action
The JAMA publication is notable for its international scope. Co-author Dr Jason Nagata, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, told Nutrition Insight that the biggest gap in current knowledge was the lack of rigorous human clinical trials for most synthetic peptides.
“We need research on the short- and long-term medical consequences of peptide use, including cardiovascular, metabolic, endocrine, liver, and mental health effects, as well as potential interactions with other medications and supplements,” Dr Nagata said.
The researchers are now working on an international cohort study across Australia, Canada, and the United States to triangulate evidence on peptide use patterns and harm clusters. Dr Piatkowski has called for population-level surveillance to model risk typologies and detect harm, drawing a parallel to RoidCheck, a world-first anabolic steroid drug-checking program he helped establish.
Health Canada and the US FDA have each issued their own recent warnings about unauthorised injectable peptide drugs, signalling a coordinated international concern about the same supply chains and marketing practices that the JAMA paper identifies.
What This Means for Australian Researchers
The JAMA paper represents a shift in how the peptide landscape is being framed by mainstream medical literature. Rather than treating unregulated peptide use as a niche bodybuilding or biohacking issue, the researchers position it as a broader public health challenge driven by commercial incentives and platform algorithms.
For Australian researchers and procurement officers, the paper reinforces the importance of sourcing compounds through verified channels with documented certificates of analysis. The distinction between research-grade peptides and grey-market consumer products is becoming sharper as regulators and academics align on the risks of the latter.
